How We Started

A public meeting was called, attended by representatives of the churches, service organisations and the chamber of commerce. From this meeting a committee was formed which eventually became the Rosewood Aged People’s Home Ctee Inc. and fund raising began. Door knocks throughout the district, a major art union, minor functions and raffles, street stalls, cent auctions, bingo etc.were organised.

One novel way of raising funds was the salvage team, who became known as the bottleos. In 1981 before the advent of re-cycling bins, a group of retired man and a few women drove their own vehicles and trailers through the district collecting salvage. They started collecting bottles and later added cardboard and newspapers, plastics and scrap metal of all kinds, which they sorted and sold. By the time the group folded in 1993 because of old age and frailty, the group had raised a total of $125,000. This group has become an icon in the district and source of pride in the community.[/ultimate_heading][ultimate_spacer height=”40″]
